Description
Agios Nikolaos or Agios Nikolakis as it is known by locals, is a small church settled on a body of cobbles stretched across the picturesque old port of Mykonos town. The church is one of the few post-byzantine era churches saved today on the island and has that distinct cycladic whitewashed and blue style that is found all over the island, though both its size and scenery make it stand out among other churches and chapels on the island.
Agios Nikolaos church was built in the 4th century, in honour of St. Nikolaos, the patron saint of fisherman, sailors, and all maritime professions. Apart from its beautiful exterior, the church also boasts of a charming old-fashioned interior with golden chandeliers, black and white tiled floor, and a beautiful painting of the starry night on the ceiling.
