Description
It’s Gaudi with a Caribbean twist! This is the organically growing neighborhood artwork project in Havana Cuba called ‘Fusterlandia’ after its originator, Jose Fuster. Fuster is a Cuban artist inspired by the work of Gaudi and Brancusi and wanted to put his artistic talents into his real-world surroundings. In 1975, he moved into a modest wood house in the rundown neighborhood of Jaimanitas outside Havana. He then set about decorating his studio in colorful mosaic. Once he was done there, he asked his neighbors if he could decorate their homes and businesses as well. A few accepted his offer and the colorful tile creations grew. Over the course of a decade, doctors’ offices, bus stops, fountains, benches, gateways, and more were enveloped by Fuster’s whimsical imagination. Today, his artwork coats the neighborhood in a rainbow of strange, enchanting fantasy. Jaimanitas was an economically depressed area before Fuster arrived. Jaimanitas is now a unique work of public art where Fuster has decorated over 80 houses with ornate murals and domes to suit the personality of his neighbors. You can almost say he has out-Gaudi’d Gaudi.
